Metamorphosing Urban Architecture in Seoul.
In seoul, due to many reasons such as rapid modernization, housing demands, urban renewal strategies, we can easily see reconstruction scene. When buildings are constructed in the city, materials like panels, fabrics, pipes, tarps, and nets are often used to signal construction for safety reasons, visibly creating boundaries between the site and the street.

All architecture, in this way, prepares its stage by showcasing the possibilities of space, layering itself into existence. Through panels, fabric, and nets, the potential of space emerges, and it feels as though a new life is being breathed into the space—like a pupa in cocoon preparing to transform into a butterfly.

This projects explores the phenomenon of urban reconstruction and the formation/structure of pupa, spatially interpreting the emotions and desires of modern city dwellers through the lens of personal experiences.

Fabric, Ashes of my diary 1000*750
As an urban dweller, the contrast between tall, magnificent buildings and the worn-out construction sites covered with fabrics and nets felt like a pupa in cocoon preparing for metamorphosis. I wanted to become a caterpillar and enter this potential space—a pupa. In an environment that constantly pushes me to compare myself to successful others, I told myself: I am merely pausing to become a butterfly! Burning the diary filled with the secretions of my emotions, I surrounded myself in pupa covered with the walls of cocoon.

The Path to Pupa  2024
Space planning model 50:1

When a caterpillar is about to become a pupa, it selects a spot along a branch to form its cocoon. It secretes a secretion substance to create the protective cocoon, within which it transforms into a pupa. Inside the pupa, the caterpillar dissolves into a liquid state, preparing to emerge as a butterfly.

I viewed the shabby tarps and pipes covering reconstruction sites in the city as a potential image of a pupa in cocoon. By architecturally interpreting the formation process and structure of a cocoon by caterpillar, I designed a cocoon-like space for myself.
