71’ of underground tunnel meditation 2024

How long do you spend time in public transport? In korean society, due to the high housing-price in seoul, commuters spend average 71minutes one way on transport. I also spent more than two hours a day on average traveling back and forth between school and my studio by subway. How do we perceive this unique space, subway? Most subway lines in Seoul are underground, making it feel as though we’re riding a tube moving through tunnels beneath the ground. I found comfort in the subway’s unique sense of public space, and it has become a place for me to empty my thoughts and meditate. The resonating sounds, swaying handles, and the lights of the underground tunnels over the window glass…

Various Media; Performance, Floating Chair, Pendulum, Digital Work, Audio Interactive Video

Meditation Floating Chair 2024

I used to lean on the handrail of the subway. Find comfort in the discomfort of public places while floating on the chair. This chair is based on real size of subway seat. I did meditation on floating chair with Korean subway line 2 in Seoul.

450*520*820mm, Wood panel, Subway handrail

71 lines on Aluminum panel, Pipe, Wire, Glass

Transparent triangle shape is repetitively swinging on reflective aluminum panel with 71 lines. Inspired by the repetitively swaying handles, passing lights beyond the windows, and subtle reflections, I visualized the repetitive nature of the 71-minute spatial experience through a meditation pendulum.
